How to Spot Real Full Grain Leather
Five quick checks that separate genuine full grain leather from bonded and coated imitations.

Full grain is the top of the leather range. It keeps the natural surface of the hide, so it is strong and it ages well. Plenty of products say "genuine" without being full grain. Here is how to check.
1. Look at the surface
Real leather has small irregularities: pores, fine lines, tiny marks. A perfectly uniform pattern repeating across the surface usually means an embossed or coated material.
2. Check the edges
Turn the piece over and look at a cut edge. Real leather shows rough, fibrous layers. Plastic or bonded leather shows a smooth, uniform edge that looks like fabric under a coating.
3. Press and watch
Press the surface with a finger. Real leather wrinkles and creates small folds like skin. Imitation leather stretches and springs back flat.
4. Smell it
Genuine leather smells earthy and warm. A sharp chemical smell points to plastic.
5. Feel the weight
Full grain leather has real weight. A jacket or bag that feels thin and light for its size deserves a closer look.
What this means when you buy
Ask for the leather grade. At Synergywear every leather product page lists the grade and the hardware used. If a seller will not tell you the grade, assume it is not full grain.
